Newport woman reports robbery
A woman who last month smashed into the front of Manes Funeral Home in Newport, after saying the accelerator on her Toyota stuck, now reports she was robbed. Becky Lane, River Street, Newport told Newport Captain Ronnie Landers that she was robbed after arriving home from church at 9:18pm Wednesday. Lane told officers that she left her car and was walking to her home when she was approached by a subject who came from beside her home, dressed in black and with a ski mask over his face. "The suspect stayed behind the victim and she felt something in her back that felt like a gun," Captain Landers said. The male allegedly told the 46 year-old Ms. Lane to open her pocketbook and he then removed the victim's billfold. After telling the woman not to call the police, the robber ran across the railroad tracks toward the East Broadway Shopping Center. Lane said the robber stayed behind her and she could not see his face. But as he ran away, she saw he had shoulder length hair, was five feet-eight inches to six feet tall and was dressed in black. She said the billfold contained no cash but had Newport Federal and National Bank of Tennessee checkbooks, credit cards and personal photos.
