Newport Farmer's Market prepares for third season
The Newport Farmer’s Market is currently recruiting vendors for the upcoming market season. The Market provides a venue for farmers and gardeners who raise locally grown produce and farm goods to sell at the Saturday markets throughout the growing season. Last years market sales brought in more than $6000 to local farmers from Cocke and surrounding counties and the Farmer’s Market Steering Committee expect the market to continue to increase its capacity in the coming season. “Last summer was the market’s second year and the number of vendors, customers, and profits doubled from the first year. We think that the coming season will be an even further success,” said Community House Cooperative Director, Terry Cutshaw. In December, the Market received a small grant from the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program that will help to promote the market through local media advertising, website creation, and increased signage. “Farmer’s markets are sprouting up all over the nation as more and more people begin to realize the nutritional and economic benefits of buying fresh produce from local farmers in their region. The market here in Newport is going to continue to grow, and with every season we hope to create new programs and events that will contribute to the health and well being of our community here in Cocke County”, said Farm Market Manager, Amelia Taylor. The Grower’s Meetings for those interested in possibly vending at this years market will take place at the Tanner Cultural Center (across from CVS Pharmacy) in Newport on March 11th, April 1st, and April 15th at 6 pm. The Market is sponsored by Community House Cooperative and the City of Newport. Call 423-623-9272 for more information.
