Newport woman is crash victim
A Newport woman died early this morning and her son was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash on East Highway 25/70 in Cocke County. Trooper Tyler Hall identified the victim of the crash as Aminah Assilmi, 65, Blazer Street, Newport, who was dead on arrival at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County after being transported there by Allied EMS. The driver of the 1999 Ford Contour, Mohamed Benjellour, 29, Antioch, Tennessee, told the officer he was very fatigued and apparently fell asleep prior to the 3:20am crash. "The car was westbound, about one mile east of the intersection with Highway 107. As the driver rounded a curve, his car left the roadway on the right, struck an embankment and then a large stump that was sticking out of the ground," the trooper said. Heavy damage resulted to the passenger side of the car. The driver, who was seriously injured, was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Trooper Hall said both occupants of the car were wearing their seat belts.
