Klezmer band to play on local campuses
Walters State Community College will host the unique musical group Tennessee Schmaltz on March 23 and 25. The band comes complete with a keyboard, an accordion, two clarinets and a washtub bass. The group will perform at the college’s Greeneville/Greene County Center for Higher Education at 9:30 a.m. on March 23 and in the theatre of the Judge William H. Inman Humanities Complex at 1:30 p.m. on March 23. Tennessee Schmaltz will perform at the Sevier County Campus at 1:15 p.m. on March 25. All performances are free and open to anyone. The band describes its style as lively and traditional klezmer music with a flavor of southern Appalachian and jazz. Their repertoire represents a variety of Jewish music from around the world. The group has been performing together since 1995. Klezmer music traces its roots back to the Yiddish-speaking cultures of Eastern Europe. The music is influenced not only by its Jewish roots, but also by gypsy cultures. Most of the college’s students have probably heard klezmer music but have not heard the term, according to Eileen Bowers, international education specialist at Walters State. “You hear the music in the background of many movies and on television. The music is very lively and happy. It makes you want to get up and dance and, when I saw the band last year, they actually encouraged the audience to dance in the aisles.
