Ball faces federal charges
A Cocke County man, indicted earlier this month by a Cocke County Grand Jury, now faces new charges returned this week by a federal grand jury seated in Greeneville. Anthony Harold Ball, 41, Industrial Road, Newport, is charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession with intent to distribute oxycodone and alprazolam, and the use of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense. All of the alleged offenses stem from an arrest in November, 2009 by Cocke County Deputy Derrick Webb. Ball also is charged in state court with bribery of a public servant because, as he was being taken to jail, the defendant allegedly offered $1,200 to Deputy Webb, "if I let him slide."
